Superfine: Tailoring Black Style
Date: May 10 – October 26, 2025
Location: New York City, The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Overview:
The Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute presents Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, a comprehensive exhibition exploring over three centuries of Black sartorial expression through the lens of dandyism. Drawing inspiration from Monica L. Miller's 2009 book, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, the exhibition delves into how fashion has been utilized by Black individuals as a means of self-expression, resistance, and identity formation.

Spanning from the 18th century to contemporary times, Superfine features a diverse array of garments, accessories, paintings, photographs, and decorative arts. The exhibition is organized into 12 thematic sections, including Ownership, Presence, Distinction, Disguise, Freedom, Champion, Respectability, Jook, Heritage, Beauty, Cool, and Cosmopolitanism, each highlighting different facets of Black dandyism and style.

Notable pieces include garments and objects belonging to American abolitionist Frederick Douglass, presented within artist Torkwase Dyson's signature geometric forms, providing a contemplative backdrop to the historical artifacts. The exhibition also showcases contemporary interpretations of Black dandyism, illustrating its evolution and enduring influence on fashion and culture.Wallpaper*WTOP News+15위키백과+15The Metropolitan Museum of Art+15
